It’s hard to believe it’s that time of year again — Hurricane Season! It only takes one storm to change your life and community. We’ve been very lucky over the years to avoid a major hit, but now is the time to be proactive and have your strategy in place!
We can never be absolutely sure if hurricane season is going to be harsh or mild. The 2004 hurricane season was one of Florida’s worst. Conversely, the 2014 hurricane season called for a below-normal hurricane season.

However, we also want you and your family to be safe. Knowing how to get ready for a storm and what to do after it has passed can significantly reduce your risk of injury and speed up the recovery process.
The Property Insurers Association of America (PCI)reminds everyone not to take any hurricane season lightly, offering a variety of resources at www.pciaa.net to help homeowners and businesses prepare for hurricane season. You should be able to provide for each family member for three days.
PGI recommends having these basic items on hand before a hurricane strikes:
- One gallon of water per person per day
- Non-perishable and easy-to-prepare food, including manual can openers
- Medications
- First-aid kit
- Emergency contact list, including the Prime Insurance Group number: (800) 763-0415
- Charged cell phone
- Plastic ware, and paper plates and bowls
- A flashlight for each member of your family and extra batteries
- Battery-operated radio
- Pet supplies, including food, collar, leash, and any medications
- Plastic trash bags or containers to protect important items, such as insurance documents
- Baby supplies, such as food, diapers, and formula
- Cash
- All your Insurance documents in one place
Once the storm has passed, it doesn’t mean it’s safe to venture outside. Unsteady ground, standing water, and unstable buildings are just a few of the dangers that hurt many people post-hurricane.
PGI recommends following these simple steps in the aftermath of a hurricane:
Stay away from downed power lines and dangerous debris, like sharp items.Do not use power generators in any enclosed area.Wait until authorities announce that it is safe to go outside.
The American Red Cross provides a detailed Hurricane to print out and keep handy before, during, and after the storm.
