Healthcare Reform – The Basics
Reading Time: < 1 minute
Ok, so Healthcare Reform is VERY confusing and complex. Let’s just start with the basics to paint you a picture.
On March 23, 2010 President Obama signed into law the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act also known as PPACA. Also known as…ACA, Obamacare and Healthcare Reform.
In a nutshell, every US citizen shall have access to ‘Affordable’ health insurance that offers minimum essential coverage (MEC) with no pre‐existing conditions.
And, coverage can be purchased through an employer’s group health plan OR through the individual market. If coverage is not ‘Affordable’, subsidies will be provided.
But, if you don’t purchase a health plan with MEC then you will penalize. If large employers do not offer affordable coverage to their employees they will also be penalized.
