Every second, 59 personal records are lost or stolen according to the Breach Level Index. We want to help you be proactive when it comes to protecting your identity and thought you might be interested to know what you can do about it.

One of the tactics is to monitor your credit score and report. It’s not difficult and it’s free. But watch out for scammers pretending to offer free services and then making you pay.

Here’s the lowdown:

  • Each of the three big credit monitoring agencies — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — has to offer you one free report a year.
  • You can also get a free report from the only officially-approved service, www.annualcreditreport.com
  • Another free service is operated by www.creditkarma.com, which covers its costs by advertising credit cards.
  • Many credit card companies also offer free score monitoring.
  • Others offer a paid-for constant monitoring service for a monthly fee of around $10.
