Just because explosive materials don’t surround your business building, doesn’t mean your office has no health and safety risks. Every job has potential hazards. These include communicable disease, transportation accidents, workplace violence, slipping and falling, chemical and gas exposure, getting struck by objects, electrocution, repetitive motion and ergonomic injuries, and hearing loss.

Some hazards are unlikely to happen in air-conditioned workspaces where employees type on a computer all day. But it’s nonetheless important to assess which hazards are most harmful to your organization and employees. While some may interrupt your company’s stability, others may threaten employee well being, or result in lost time and funds.

But with thorough planning, these health and safety risks can be avoided.
The authority for legal requirements in your particular industry or state is the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). This division of the federal government enforces health and safety laws.In Florida, there is no state agency in charge of OSHA training and compliance.Federal OSHA is in charge of regulating OSHA training. You can use OSHA requirements to establish an effective safety and health program for your workplace.
Start with these steps:
Identify and record potential hazards
First you should identify and document potential hazards, as well as implement a safety protocol before employees use equipment or materials in the workplace. By introducing simple safety procedures, like require rubber-soled shoes to be worn by all employees, you can help prevent employees from slipping and falling. Also be sure to document safety measures you put in place. This way you can reference them for OSHA inspectors or insurance auditors.
Provide information and training
Next you should provide employees with education and training on injury and illness prevention. This includes exposing potential hazards together, preventative measures for common accidents, and what to do if an accident happens. Especially hold training sessions when new substances, processes, or equipment are introduced into the company. (Online instruction is a convenient way to take OSHA-accepted training.)
If you’re not sure where to begin, check with the USF Safety Florida consultation program. A consultant will review your workplace for existing or possible hazards, determine what you need to make your safety and health program effective, and work with you to develop a plan for making these improvements and to implement procedures for ongoing effectiveness.
By implementing safety and health procedures, your company will flourish from greater productivity, improved morale, safety awareness, less injuries, and lower workers’ compensation costs.
